#5 Revolutions in the Arts

Impressionism- Artists reacted against realism by seeking to convey their impressions of subjects or movements in time.

Claude Monet, Impression Soleil Levant, 1872
This shows Impressionism because it includes small brush strokes and unusual visual angles.
Realism- Writers and painters sought to show life as it is, rather than it should be.

Bonjour, Monsieur Courbet 1854 Gustave Courbet
This shows Realism because it shows the deception of subjects as they appear everday. It is showing a group of men who are dressing as they normally do.

Romanticism- Focused on emotion in nature rather than reason and society.

Combat of Giaour and Hassan, Eugène Delacroix, 1826
This shows Romanticism because it shows heroism with the men fighting.
